No- Knead French Bread

” I was making a big pot of spaghetti sauce this morning and thought to myself: Some nice crusty bread would go great with this.  Then I remembered a recipe for French Bread I found some time ago that looked fairly un-intimating (is that a word?)… so I thought why not?” Pam

Ingredients:

½ cup water (for yeast)

1 package yeast

2 cup warm (110°F) water

3 tablespoon Sugar

3 teaspoon Salt

5 tablespoon shortening

6 cup flour

Preparation:

Dissolve yeast, mix remaining ingredients, except only add 3 cups of flour and beat well.

Add yeast. Beat.

Add remaining flour, stir well with a wooden or plastic spoon.

Leave the spoon in the batter, cover and let dough rest 10 minutes.

Stir down batter and let rest again.

Repeat this 3 more times.

Divide dough in half, roll out in rectangle shape.

Cut diagonally about 3 times across loaf and let rise until doubled in size (about 60-90 minutes).

Brush with egg white and bake loaves on cookie sheet at 400°F for 35 minutes.

You can combine this amazing recipe with some others from our collection.

Yields 2 loaves.

  1. What do you think would happen if I substituted the shortening for butter?

    1. Hi Cam, thanks for the visit and the comment. To know exactly what would happen, I have to repeat the recipe with that change and then it will be another recipe to publish.
